Happiness is carefree and careless, whereas there is a brooding poeticalness to sadness. It is the most artistic and intellectual of the emotions. Subtle sadness has given humanity a greater understanding of the world than any other strain of emotionality. Pity those who have never known real suffering, for surely their life must be confined to the surface of things. Woe to those whose spirits have an unrelenting buoyancy, for the depths of life must repel them for it, and incapable of diving, they will never understand more than the shallow shoals of happiness, with no eyes for dark depths or dark nights.
